Monash College, a subsidiary of Monash University, marked a significant milestone with the official inauguration of its Docklands campus, coinciding with the launch of its groundbreaking Future Skills division. This strategic move will enable the college to expand its vocational education and training (VET) offerings, enhancing students’ practical skills and bridging industry gaps.

Although operational since December 2021, the Docklands campus faced disruptions due to COVID-19, delaying its official opening ceremony. However, the resumption of normal operations paved the way for this celebratory event, which was amplified by the college’s role as the Victorian host of National Skills Week, held from August 21 to 27.

The Monash College Docklands campus warmly welcomes an international student cohort hailing from countries such as China, Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and Saudi Arabia. Positioned at the intersection of education and industry, this campus is poised to play a pivotal role in addressing the pressing skills shortages experienced in both Victorian and national economies.

Monash University’s Interim President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Susan Elliott AM, participated in the campus opening and underscored its significance for the state and the nation. Professor Elliott emphasized the campus’s consolidation of the College’s prior operations across multiple locations into a single contemporary hub. This dedicated space facilitates students’ pursuit of foundational, English language, and diploma courses, serving as a seamless stepping stone toward Monash University.

As a Registered Training Organisation, Monash College recognizes the pivotal role of vocational education and training in aligning with industry demands. This institution, firmly linked to Monash University, not only prepares students for a digital and dynamic world but also acts as a conduit for industry collaboration and government engagement.

The launch of Monash College Future Skills stems from the visionary leadership of CEO Jo Mithen. This initiative, developed in collaboration with industry and education experts, is meticulously designed to impart skills aligned with industry challenges and future workforce needs. Future Skills will offer a versatile range of vocational skills-based programs, initially focusing on areas such as IT, cyber security, leadership, and business. The subsequent expansion will encompass courses catering to the health and care industry.

Micro skills, credentials, and accredited qualifications in fields like artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, digital leadership, and project management will be hallmarks of the Future Skills offerings. This visionary approach resonates with the evolving landscape of industry requirements, particularly in the realms of digital literacy and emerging technologies.

Collaboratively supported by Monash University’s extensive network, Monash College is perfectly poised to contribute to Melbourne’s reputation as a knowledge city. Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp hailed the college’s integration into the city’s educational fabric, describing it as a cornerstone of Melbourne’s prowess in education and skills provision.

Over nearly three decades, Monash College has paved pathways for more than 77,000 students to transition seamlessly into Monash University. A testament to its impact, 40 percent of international students at Monash University originate from Monash College. Furthermore, its influence extends beyond Monash, with graduates shaping the success stories of various Australian universities.

The past five years have witnessed a significant presence from international students, with China contributing 70 percent of enrollees, while other nationalities such as Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, and India enrich the multicultural tapestry.
